I have a lot of issues with what this man (not “boy”) says. First, he says “doing make-up is just natural…it’s in my veins.” As a woman who is EXPECTED to wear make-up I find this really offensive. If he really cares about the “girls” he is sharing the restroom with, why doesn’t he at least take the time to read something about the lives and struggles of women over the past, oh, decades? You are exactly right that gay men need to deal with this issue – if gay men feel uncomfortable in the men’s room because of fear of attack rooted in homophobia, that’s an issue they need to deal with directly, by working to eradicate homophobia from other men. It’s endlessly irritating that the impulse to hide behind mommy’s skirts is the default response to much of the concerns about *safety*.

I have a lot of issues with what this man (not “boy”) says. First, he says “doing make-up is just natural…it’s in my veins.” As a woman who is EXPECTED to wear make-up I find this really offensive. If he really cares about the “girls” he is sharing the restroom with, why doesn’t he at least take the time to read something about the lives and struggles of women over the past, oh, decades? Or is it only the “gay boy” liberation movement he cares about?
He also says he is not using the men’s restroom just “to make society” happy. Um, I think the “society” he is referring to is WOMEN. The inability to name who does what to whom is something feminists have brought up over and over in the past decades.
Finally, he says “the feeling [of not caring he's in the bathroom] is mutual among all the participants.” Wow, a bit of mind-reading there? I believe there’s a quote to the effect of ” a recurring theme in all women’s lives is don’t piss of Mr. Sir” because you’ll experience or may experience violence if you do. Women don’t know how this man will react if we show negativity towards him, and since men generally aren’t willing to call out other men on their violence against women, our best bet for safety is to act nice! and friendly!

By the way, another very upsetting thing at BV, was that all the bathrooms had “gender neutral” signs, with both that horrible image in a skirt, supposed to represent us, and the male image. Theoretically, this was supposed to make the Lesbians who get harassed going into women’s bathrooms feel better, but I didn’t want to see a male there. Since I arrived before the second sign was up, I warned friends which really was the male one. I did not feel any safer either from the het women looking at us like we were freaks. At least, for once, we outnumbered them.
