Gender Identity
January 10, 2012
I-dentity (aka trans) politics is fundamentally LIBERTARIAN. It is ahistorical and acontextual. It essentializes sex stereotypes by renaming them consensual “gender identities.” It invisibilizes power structures that give rise to female oppression. It is anti-feminist.

Thanks, GM, I am always looking for a more concise definition, and so far, this is it. “Consensual ‘gender identities.’ Excellent.

Pretty good definition, Gallus.
I like the analogy between libertarians and transactivists. In theory I should support both groups. I mean, freedom and liberty and individual rights is good stuff, right? The problem is many libertarians always seem to deviate from their own belief systems so you wind up with somebody like Ron Paul who is all about freedom and individual choices…..except for you women who can’t be trusted to self regulate your own reproduction. Wait….where did all your individual liberty stuff go??
I feel the same about many transactivists. I’m all for rejecting gender stereotypes, rejecting cultural expectations related to gender, supporting individual choices…….wait, why are you people reinforcing gender roles??! Why are you promoting stereotypes??!
Nat’l Geo channel’s “Taboo” has a story about a trans that now wants to become a paraplegic. Uhg.

Such good points.
It’s UP’s definition btw. I credited her in the post but maybe it’s not clear, especially because I often post definitions in my RadFem Dictionary and RadFem 4 Dummies posts.
“I feel the same about many transactivists. I’m all for rejecting gender stereotypes, rejecting cultural expectations related to gender, supporting individual choices…….wait, why are you people reinforcing gender roles??! Why are you promoting stereotypes??!”
I know. It’s such an incredible disappointment that a political movement that could be dedicated to destroying sex roles is based on a Genderist philosophy far more conservative than anything the right wing ever dreamed up. And that they are co-opting women’s liberation and civil rights movements to legislate and promote their conservative anti-female agenda.

Excellent definition, and also you hit the nail about libertarianism… it’s always about the liberty of men in the public sphere, never about the liberty of women in the private sphere…. Ron Paul is a public sphere male, so of course women can’t have liberty over their own bodies… because it’s the private patriarchally controlled sphere. Thanks!
And gender stereotypes are about a conservative anti-feminist stance, and since it is largely the male to trans coming up with this, you know that they being male wouldn’t have any idea that THEIR IDEA of female is a male invention. They wouldn’t know otherwise, because they are male. Even if they tried they can’t get this. I’d liken it to first generation immigrants and their struggle to “become American.” The children will, they won’t because the old country just doesn’t disappear when they become citizens. The thing is, most first generation immigrants are very honest…. they may be enchanted with their new country, but they don’t pretent they are not Armenian or Mexican or Polish…
MtTrans just don’t admit that they aren’t women, that they want a role, but that isn’t being female, it’s being a female role (created by men in the first place), hense their horrifying anti-feminism. This is too long, but there you have it.

Very well put. It’s always about the liberty of men in the public sphere — always. You never hear libertarians advocate a woman’s right to make choices over her own body; it just doesn’t happen.

I think the point about consent is really important. I’ve heard transfolks say that “cis” people (it’s always born women they’re referring to) are forcing gender on them without their consent. As if I chose to be born female! Female babies are aborted before they’re even born just for being female! Show me the consent in that!
Just another reason to fight the “consent” propaganda wherever we find it.
