This from Rose Verbena’s Twitter–a rilly smart one tells us about chromosomes:

    “Megan ‏@concrete_sky

newflash to rad fems: sex is a socially constructed concept just as much as gender is. who decided that XY = male? SOCIETY! #radfem2012”

    Riiiight…

I’m convinced that the lot of them slept through biology. Sigh.

      Oh dear god.

Yes, so XY has no correlation at all with the state of being male! I now stand corrected. I wonder what our dear psuedo-friends in the gnu-left have to say about this…you know, the ones who worship the science gods Dawkins and Hitchens and Sam Harris et al.

        We’re for teh science…’cept when we’re not.

        Sigh.

It’s because half the time they use “male” correctly to mean biological sex, and the other half the time they use “male” to mean “masculine” gender.

Where they need to be poking is the association of “male” and “masculine” – the need for gender at all.

Gender as a concept can be useful, if it’s talking about presentation and behaviors and all the rest. First step is to admit it’s a spectrum, then divorce it from sex, and all is fine. Wear what you want, do what you want.

Just hanging around the internet, in fact, it seems that until fairly recently most people, regardless of how they felt about various debates on trans* issues, were happy to say “sex is physical, gender is mental” basically. You’d get argument over whether “woman” should mean “female” or “feminine” or include both, but the “sex and gender are not the same thing” was fine.

Lately though? People want to say that “sex” and “gender” are the same again, but this time they want them BOTH to be what “gender” used to be, that is, freely chosen and “I say so therefore I am.” Which, IMHO, makes no sense. There are two words for a REASON.

But if you say that, oh, that’s 101, and we’re not in 101 space anymore! Hence, “XY doesn’t need to be male” and “my female penis” and the rest.
