“But there’s no such thing as autogynephilia!”: Phone Sex, the Male Gaze, and How Blanchard and Trans* Activists Both Get It Wrong

May 3, 2013

From the post:
“The sooner trans* people acknowledge that yes, creepy autogynephiles and people who idealize femininity in ultimately patriarchal ways are in their movement, the sooner it will be easier for radical feminists and trans activists to have a reasonable conversation about the complex conflicts involved in letting trans* women into women’s spaces. Pretending that these people do not exist does a disservice to the women who know that they have been economically, emotionally, socially or physically coerced into helping men live out their fantasy lives as women.”

Whenever radical feminists and trans* activists clash about trans* issues, there’s a major divide on the issue of something called “autogynephilia.”

Autogynephilia is often advanced as one of two forms of transsexuality for men–the other involves a very feminine homosexuality that manifests as transsexuality.  I don’t buy into Blanchard’s easy two-part typology. But at the same time, it’s ridiculous for trans* people and their allies to claim that autogynephilia isn’t real.

I know this, because I worked as a phone sex operator for a number of years.

During those years, I only had one woman caller–she wanted to know who her husband had been calling all this time, late at night.

However, I’d also hear another type of call from men who got off on the idea of themselves as women.  Sometimes, they’d call already using a falsetto.  Other times, they’d want me to suss out what they wanted, because…

    This!

    • Cassandra Says:

Since men using trans women as an excuse to invade women’s spaces is a fully legitimate concern, perhaps there could be a set rule that a trans woman can only enter if she shows proof that she’s either: a) changing her legal gender OR b) is on route to changing her legal gender. So stuff like a letter from her physician prescribing HRT, evidence of legal name change etc. would all be legitimate.

That way, the concern of men pretending to be women entering women’s spaces is solved.

      • GallusMag Says:

Funny you should say that. Feminist attorneys Cathy Brennan and Elizabeth Hungerford suggested just such a compromise on Gender Identity legislation. In response they were called “exterminationists” by mainstream LGBT (male) websites including Bilerico, Pam’s House Blend, etc. Autumn Sandeen, Cristin Williams, Marti Abernathy, Katrina Rose, Mercedes Allen, Jillian T. Weiss, Roz Kaveney, Paris Lees, Joann Prinzivalli, Antonia D’orsay, Joelle Ruby Ryan, Julia Seranno, Angela Brightfeather (now “Shaman” Brightfeather), Janet Mock, Dana Beyer, Meghan Stabler, Monica Roberts, Suzan Cooke, Beth Elliot, Kelli Busey and many many more trans activists rubber stamped this abuse. Brennan and Hungerford’s families including partners, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews were stalked and harassed and targeted and their pictures and home addresses posted online. They were harassed at their jobs and their homes and called murderers. SO GO FUCK YOURSELF NOW. WE ARE DONE NEGOTIATING WITH MALE TERRORISTS.

      • GallusMag Says:

I recommend a google search of “exterminationist transgender” (without quotation) for anyone interested in the transgender male terrorist history against feminists.

      • GallusMag Says:

I get (unpublished) comments on a near daily basis threatening the families of these women. SO GO FUCK YOURSELF.

…or why don’t you just get your own thing…somewhere else away from women. Trans”women” are MEN! Period. Get lost.

They can whinge about Bailey, Blanchard, and the term autogynephilia as much as they want. The fact is, it has very good explanatory and predictive power, unlike theories of brain sex and being born in the wrong body.

It’s worth noting that Blanchard said homosexual m2f also do what he called a “sexual calculus” when deciding to go the full route. These men know they are effeminate, know they are attracted to other males, and know that their effeminacy will make it difficult to attract other homosexual males. They know they’ll get more guys if they read female at least superficially, so they opt for surgery and hormones.

I actually think the lines aren’t quite as clear as Bailey draws them. There are mixed types, and lots of crossover, with heterosexual and bisexual autogynephiles being the most prominent group. But in any case, it IS about sex.

But dudes, you’re not fooling us.

    • JJ Says:

Good points, but it isn’t about sex for asexual/celibate transsexuals.

      • Em Says:

Celibacy and “asexuality” are about behavior (or lack thereof). Transsexualism is about drives and impulses. The two can operate in parallel but they don’t have to.

  3. SheilaG Says:

Never negotiate with male terrorists. There simply is no point to it. Born women are the vast majority, we can control our spaces. We don’t have to care what these terrorists say or do, we simply need to stand our ground and mean it.
Negotiating with men over women’s safety is just not worth it. We either stand our ground or they will rape us anyway. That’s just the male mind that can’t comprehend at all what women think and feel in the world.

  4. Bev Jo Says:

No, no, no, no….. Who fucking cares about all the elaborate little details about the endless variety of fantasies men who claim to be women or Lesbians have. It’s really very simple. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “TRANS-WOMEN.” “TRANS-WOMEN ARE MEN.” Anything else is mind-fuck and an attempt at mind rape.

No, men don’t use “trans women as an excuse to invade women’s spaces” and there is no rule that would make a man a woman. Surgery and hormones do not make men women. NOTHING does.

They just keep trying to invade and get past “no,” don’t they?

How can saying that anything will make it “easier for radical feminists and trans activists to have a reasonable conversation about the complex conflicts involved in letting trans* women into women’s spaces???” Nothing complex about it at all. Once men are in “women’s spaces,” whether they call themselves “women” or “trans-women,” they are not “women’s spaces.” Obviously, clearly…. nothing is reasonable about destroying women’s spaces. What part of “no” do they not understand?

Trying to con us into thinking that “privilegedenyingtranny” is what he says he is, only proves he is just one more man trying to con women. Nothing new here. And yes, compromising with “transgender male terrorists” never works. The women who try only end up betraying all women.

The trans cult is all on a continuum of fantasy and lying, with hating females at its core. Some of the only women courageous enough to say no and name the con for what it is, like Gallus Mag, get death threats.

Yes, “FUCK YOU SICK ASS HATEFUL VIOLENT PRICKS FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER.”

    GM, did you see this?
Not sure where to post this and do not mean to derail. Just wanted to bring it to GM attention. Women fawning over these men.

  6. Chazz Says:

Engaging in a discussion with trans about anything to do with their “identity” lends credibility to their their fetishes and fantasies. There is NOTHING creditable in anything they say or do, so don’t acknowledge them in any way.

Shun them and, if they press you, say: No, you’re NOT a woman. Now, get out of my face before I call a cop.

    • luckynkl Says:

I’m of the same mindset. When the big bad wolf dressed up as grandma comes knocking at your door, you don’t let him in to have a discussion. Just slam the door right in his face.

Do some ppl not get the meaning of Little Red Riding Hood? It’s a perfect analogy for trans.

  7. Abi Says:

I agree with this. For anyone one, “trans” included, to have a severe mental issue that severely impacts upon their lives, I would want to be compassionate to them. I know most decent thinking women would be. But as women, we know that that there is a strong ‘sinister’ sexual element to a lot of “trans”. There are many females who have been terrorised by so called MTF.

The so called right of “FTM” to access female changing/bathroom areas of females has been so intense(?) that it makes me and other females feel UNEASY. Why is that this is the main Trans “MTF” call for civil rights????
African-Americans, who have had completely terrible and undignified restrictions on their public lives, had public pressure groups that were concerned with increasing access to Jobs, Housing, Schooling, Political rights. Toilets did not come into it apart from not having unsanitary conditions forced upon them.
