From the Independent:

The lesbian writer and co-founder of the Justice For Women campaign says she has been sent 30 unsavoury messages, some including death and rape threats, with three so severe that she reported them to the police.

Bindel was invited to speak at the Manchester Debating Union event against the motion that porn empowers women, but her role in the lineup alongside No More Page 3 founder Lucy Holmes and former porn actress Renee Richards was met with fierce criticism from students and transgender activists.

The opposition is thought to stem from an article on transgender issues that Bindel wrote for The Guardian in 2004, in which she described gender reassignment clinics as places where lesbians can go to ‘have their breasts sliced off and a penis made out of their beer bellies”.

Further controversial comments included the apparently dismissive conclusion, “I don’t have a problem with men disposing of their genitals, but it does not make them women, in the same way that shoving a big of vacuum hose down your 501s does not make you a man”.

Following the announcement of the speakers, a demonstration was organised by Loz Webb, trans representative for the university’s LGBTQ Society. Webb felt that it was wrong to give a platform to someone with “a track record of transphobia” during Welcome Week, when making all students feel safe and included is particularly important.

However, after hearing that Bindel had received violent threats over her attendance, Webb sent his “deepest sympathies” to her, insisting that the “unacceptable” hate messages had nothing to do with him or those he represents.

Explaining her decision to withdraw from the debate, Bindel told student newspaper The Mancunion: “I apologised for the tone in that article because I made really inappropriate jokes. I apologised but obviously that wasn’t good enough as I’ve been made a scapegoat.”

Bindel said that she chose to back down because her presence risked shutting down debate of an issue she feels is highly worthy of discussion. “I was coming to debate pornography. I was censored from speaking about something that has nothing to do with ‘transgenderism’, nothing at all,” she said.

A statement from Manchester students’ union called the threats “utterly unjustified”.

It went on: “We respect, support and celebrate the right of our students to protest and to feel safe on campus. The union has seen no evidence that any University of Manchester students were complicit in sending Julie Bindel rape or death threats but we wholly condemn anybody who has done so.”

Bindel reacted to claims on social media that her appearance would make trans people feel unsafe, calling the suggestions ‘ludicrous’. Yet she insisted that ‘silly, stupid, idiotic, we’re too cool for school so we’ll kick up a fuss students’ will not put her off returning to the university in the future.

“I would love to come back and do something again,” Bindel confirmed.

It’s not like anybody is getting silenced here or anything. Trans activists would *never* do that. Why, they even said so in that letter to all of us witches. When their associates aren’t writing threatening letters to speakers, I mean.

  2. Sharon Says:

Rape and death threats are ancient tactics employed by men to silence uppity women. Why should they stop doing something that has worked so well?

If the death and rape threats come from a male in a skirt, then it is still her fault. Same old story, just with a new twist.

Salon seems to be a nice place for leaving nasty comments about Bindel. But hey, if dudes couldn’t comment, there’d be no advertising revenue to pay women to write articles vaguely supportive of lesbian feminists, even if they’re required to label them as “disagreeable.”

Depressing first of all that we STILL have to have debates about pornography. Yeah, if I was a fresher, that would make be feel so welcomed…………

Then depressing again to find that the trans cult have got their hooks into what used to be lesbian and gay soc (and I presume the womens group as well if they still have that anachronism!), and think it is okay to try to silence a prominent speaker on violence against women because of a totally different issue.

Because as we already know, the trans cult ONLY cares about violence against women if it’s violence against them AND it gets claimed as violence against WOMEN (getting accepted on the phone line of a rape crisis line even better!).

Plus I’d bet that the trans cult just LOVES porn as well, especially the pretendbians playing with their ladysticks type……………….

The fact that the trans cult indicates their displeasure by the typical male online death threats etc is no surprise to anyone, when a woman merely trying to get a dead lady novelist on a bank note is enough to prompt the same response.

Again and again and again, women don’t MATTER one little bit to the trans crowd.

Has the University investigated to make sure none of its students are involved? Have they gotten police involved? How have they made their campus a safe place for Julie Bindel and all other women? Clearly, there are rapists and murderers present. What has the University done to be proactive in this rather than just issuing a vague statement about their students? What about other employees of the University?

Is there any way that larger political forces are involved? How about a government investigation of that? Certainly if the government has records of all phone calls, internet activity, etc., they could catch and prosecute these threateners if they wanted to. If these were considered terrorists would we see such a lax approach? Because they are, in fact, terrorists. Perhaps a movement to classify them as such would get things moving in stopping them.

How can these transactivists get classified as terrorists? Starting with classification as a hate group. Some groups like this have gotten classified as crime syndicates in the U.S., that’s another possibility depending on the laws.

    Unacceptable.

The “you must not criticize porn, because porn is empowering for women and they choose to engage with it and produce it, if you criticize it YOU are oppressing women (denying them agency! oppressing sex workers!), how can you be a feminist?” line goes right hand-in-hand with the “you must not ever deny transwomen access to anything or exclude them, if you do YOU are oppressing women (women more oppressed than you! Suicide! Violence!), how can you be a feminist?” line, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

So I am very much not surprised that trans students and allies are going after her on the porn thing.

The attitude there is that all the cool women are “sex-positive” and willing to play along with the men games and laugh at themselves even when the talk gets (IMHO quite) misogynistic because “haha you know it’s all a game and can’t you take a joke? Only people who can’t compete would ever complain” etc etc etc. Usually followed up by some variety of “oh yeah and you’re ugly no one would want you anyway you old bag.”

So predictable. Always leads down to that last desperate line.

And the “your presence as a TERF makes me feel unsafe”? Please. Just another version of the “your not buying into my elaborate house of cards explanation of how I’m really a woman is DIRECTLY causing the death of M2T around the world.” I still fail to see how that happens, but that’s the accusation always.

Personally I think the Bindel’s quoted “I don’t have a problem with men disposing of their genitals, but it does not make them women, in the same way that shoving a big of vacuum hose down your 501s does not make you a man” is right on. No one is denying anyone the right to do whatever bodymods they want. But absolutely, that doesn’t make them women, and there is no “laydee brain.”

I’m very interested in hearing Juliie Bindel speak against porn, perhaps she would YouTube her talk?

In the US there has been a serious backlash against trans since the Pvt. Manning announcement, it seems the rank and file are not on the same page as trans argument that XY’s are XX’s and can share children’s bathrooms for one.

Thanks for continuing to build awareness of what this cultish trans fetishists are up to. And, It’s no good, the more we learn the more ridiculous and elitist their demands appear. And, dangerous.

This is inciting to hate crimes against born women here.

Reblogged this on winterdominatrix and commented:
Famous author and feminist writer drops out of porn debate due to rape and death threats from the ‘transgender community’ of men that have a fetish for calling themselves pornifyed women. Porn-culture is clearly male driven and has escalated into men believing that they can turn into lesbians by putting on a dress, taking hormones and pushing porn and prostitution on women as a female right they wish to lead us into. The most violent threats made on women is when they speak out on pushing porn and prostitution on women as a ‘woman’s job’ women must do in the name of ‘feminism’.
Sadly, Women have far to go in pay equality and the fight to be granted equality or even equal pay in regular jobs. Women’s rights and struggle for equality is being sabotaged by pushing sexual servitude on women as a job they are meant to do to serve men better.. The male porn culture now demands it’s male right to have sex with females that are gay and don’t desire men. Men are making the demand that porn use real lesbians, And if they have to put on dresses and scream transphobia and make rape / death threats to force women into traffiked conditions they get to control, they will. So far, no one wants to stand up for the protection of women or single women with children from these porn sick men that are bored with online porn and want to inject themselves in more realistic situations of dominating women for sex entertainment. They blame women, especially radical feminists for the ban on rape porn in the UK, and the crack down on child pornagraphy!
    Beware!
Women that get inbetween men and their porn fetishes are being targeted with the most death and rape threats. This is not about being women, this is about porn and mens’ rights over controlling women’s communities and getting what they want..

“Regardless, we’re also,,, .” Thanks for the admission of your violence.

  11. I read the discussion on fakebook. One thing that was overwhelming in the responses was the whole “Oh she makes trans students not feel safe.” repeated over and over again.

But none of them are actually saying HOW she makes them feel unsafe or WHY she makes them feel unsafe other than “she’s a transphobe” in a circle over and over again.

The circular argument drives me batty.

    • Versa Says:

She makes them feel unsafe by having the audacity to disagree with their beliefs about biology and identity. See, they’re so fragile that they can’t tolerate anyone daring to see the world with a different perspective than theirs. They might kill themselves, you know. Just like a real woman will go kill herself if someone mistakes her for a man.

  12. red Says:

Their understanding of oppression and injustice is the paint by numbers version.

  13. integritymatters Says:

porn and transgender have EVERYTHING to do with each other, for goodness’ sake. It’s so blindingly obvious. I bet a high proportion of the ‘women’ in porn are actually post-opt MTFs. I mean, normal women just wouldn’t do this unless they were permanently on drugs.

The reality is that porn has warped a whole generation of younger adults’ DEFINITION of women and men as biological beings.
You’re right that ‘cool women’ want to be *seen* to be ‘sex-positive’, which is a moving target in reality because it’s defined by whatever the guys who are perceived to be alphas want.

  14. Jen Says:

Some argue that dominatrices aren’t being coerced by the patriarchy, but having worked as one I can say with a resounding YES that we don’t set the agenda. All of the Dommes I worked with were permanently on drugs or drunk.
