Carmen Carrera: “Tranny” is a slur, but “Nigga” is just fine

"Transwoman" Carmen Carrera

“Transwoman” Carmen Carrera

The trans male and gay male and drag queen communities have been roiling for weeks over the issue of whether the gay community word “tranny” is an affectionate term with a long history, or a bigoted slur against transgender male “transwomen”. I frame this as an entirely male issue both because the female (F2T) trans community has largely adopted the “affectionate” usage of this term long ago, and also because the transgender politic is a male-centric men’s rights movement, and as such the female opinion is not addressed or given credence in any of the many dozens of articles and opinion pieces generated on this issue in recent months.

This recent iteration of the “Tranny” controversy stems from the use of the word by RuPaul, a gay black man and community icon with a long-running television show featuring female impersonators on the LOGO television network.

RuPaul, in and out of drag

RuPaul, in and out of drag

Arguably his biggest critic is a former contestant of that show, Carmen Carrera, a man previously featured on this blog when he “shushed” Katie Couric for asking if Carrera had undergone any surgical modification of his dick and balls (he hasn’t, as he intends to persuade an actual female to transform his sperm into a family for him and his gay male partner). Weeks after shaming the journalist and accusing her of asking overly invasive questions about his reproductive sex organs (which he claimed were too painful to answer), Carrera auctioned off photos of his penis for a high-profile HIV fundraiser. Hypocrisy.

This week Carmen Carrera is back in the gay press defending himself against recent revelations that exposed his own long personal usage of the word “Tranny”, referring to himself and others, during recorded public interviews and appearances.

What is interesting is what is not being reported.

Then again, that’s why you read GenderTrender, correct?

What is not being reported in any of these stories about Carrera’s opinion on what constitutes a slur, is his long public use of the word “Nigga” to refer to Black individuals. It’s not exactly a secret. Carrera has been calling blacks “Niggas” for years, and continues to do so. It is interesting that Carrera calls Gay Black men “bigots” for using the word “Tranny” to refer to themselves, as he (a non-black person) calls these men by the racist slur “Niggas”.

When Carrera refused to explain this outrageous contradiction and ignored requests for response by his followers on social media the fans began posting screen caps of his racist slurs by the dozen on his facebook page and in his twitter feed. Carrera finally responded to the furor on May 31 by deleting many of his racist tweets. He then claimed that the racist tweets were “fakes”. Unfortunately (for him) Carerra had failed to delete all of the “fake” tweets from his account, as they spanned over several years. In fact, some of them still remain. His followers became enraged by his blatant lie, and thousands of enraged commenters reacted to his falsified denial by verbalizing their complaints on his Facebook page.

The now deleted implausible Facebook denial

The now deleted implausible Facebook denial

Eventually Carrera deleted his implausible denial, along with many hundreds of the comments, banning hundreds from his page. As people continue to post comments of protest, he deletes them, and bans them from further comment.

Now, it is likely not a surprise to many that Carmen Carrera is demonstrably racist, a hypocrite, an unintelligent man, and a blatant liar whose opinion on any subject is of questionable credibility.  What does surprise some is that the so-called “LGBT” (male) media has decided to white-wash these recent developments entirely from their reportage, even though they are all well aware of them.

Since mainstream LGBT outlets like The Advocate have refused to report on this matter in pieces on Carmen Carrera even as recently as today, I am posting some of Carrera’s many racist tweets- (that he has denied making!)- here, below the fold.

  1. Damn that dude is a fucking narcisstic idiot. Also not long ago – he wrote in a tweet that he wanted to slap people with his dick.

Even if his face looks different his huge body and behaviours scream MAN.

  2. Not only has he used the word tranny, he has used the “nigga” word. I guess he thinks he sounds cool when he says, “nigga”, but it just doesn’t sound cool coming from someone who looks more Hispanic/White than black. I know some black people have been known to say the word, but it’s a BIG no no when White folks say it. I think it sounds extremely offensive even coming from young black dudes, but I’m not black.

I’ve been looking at online photos of Carmen Carrera. Carrera looks Hispanic to me, or possibly Hispanic and white. Why is some Hispanic person using the “nigga” word? That is offensive as heck. On one hand Carrera dresses like a woman and tries to act like some kind of refined “lady”, and then he tries to talk like some kind of hip, trash talking black teenager even though he doesn’t look black to me.

It’s bad enough that Janet Mock butchers the historical meaning of the term underground railroad, but at least he is black. Carrera doesn’t look black to me, and he uses the “nigga” word. When Carrera was using the “nigga” word, who was he addressing? Was it a black person or someone else?

***I apologize to any and all black people for using this word. Since I’m not black, I have no right to use it.

  3. Dear Carmen,

In the words of Judge Judy, “Beauty fades, but dumb is forever”.

  4. “he hasn’t, as he intends to persuade an actual female to transform his sperm into a family for him and his gay male partner”

Is it true that he wants to keep his male genitalia intact so that he can father children? This definitely makes him MALE. Yes, I’m a “woman”, but I’m going to use my sperm to impregnate a woman, or fertilize an egg.

FTM Thomas Beatie gave birth to three babies after legally changing her sex to male.

It’s ridiculous when transgender people deliberately keep their reproductive system so that they can have children all the while demanding that people call them the opposite sex. Males don’t get pregnant and females don’t have sperm.

    • kesher Says:

It annoys me too when the media breathlessly report the first pregnant man as though it’s a Junior situation. No. That person was born female. That person has a uterus and ovaries. There is no novelty here.

      • Lizzy Shaw Says:

I’ll third that notion. Thanks to the idiotic idea that we must call all transgenders by their preferred sex/aren’t allowed to mention their birth sex leads to a lot of inaccuracy. I knew people who did think that the Thomas Beatie thing was a Junior situation. There was a cracked article about inaccuracies in reporting that mentioned that Thomas Beatie was really female, but I don’t think it got slammed with accusations of “cissexism” because no one cares about FTMs/FTTs.

That’s also why you get news stories about the “lesbian” who raped “her” wife with “her” penis, because of this preferred sex/preferred pronoun garbage.

    • Siobhan Says:

This is what he has on the facebook page, after saying that he doesn’t mind people asking personal questions (tell that to Katie Couric!):
Yes, I live my life as a female but I have not gotten my gender reassignment surgery. To be honest, Im still thinking about that part. Me and my husband want to be able to have kids one day and once I get the surgery, I will not be able to produce DNA to create an offspring with a genetic females DNA.
Of course, Carrera isn’t talking about “a genetic female’s DNA,” he is talking about his own DNA. He wants to hang onto his nuts because he wants to use his sperm to impregnate a woman and create a child.

  5. kesher Says:

When I read quoted text, I tend to read it according to the voice of however I imagine the person speaking. If the person is someone whose voice I’m familiar with (such as a celebrity), I’ll “hear” that person’s voice in my head as I’m reading. If I don’t know the sex of the person, I’ll often assign a male/female voice according to how I perceive the writing, if it comes across as a male or female writing style, and I’ve found that, when I find out the sex of the person who was quoted, my assumption about their sex is usually right. I’d wager I have an 80 percent accuracy rate.

In this case, as I read Carrera’s tweets, I, without even thinking about it, assigned a male voice as I was reading. Make what you will of that.

  6. ngblog Says:

In fairness to Carmen Carrera, the N word is a very popular term among black and puerto rican youth.

    • GallusMag Says:

As is the T-word : “Tranny”, among Black and Puerto Rican youth and gay males and trans females and all the others in the GBT that Carerra calls bigots.

BTW he denies ever using that word. Hence this post.

    • GallusMag Says:

I find it quite disturbing that Christopher/Carmen celebrates racial slurs, lies about it, and then calls black gays bigots for using an in-community term for themselves. Fuck him.

  7. shediogenes Says:

I dont do twitter, so I’m curious, can you delete twitter feed that doesnt originate from ur own twitter account? Did the N word posts just magically disappear just when Carmen needed them to even tho they were “fake” and presumably originated with someone else, some imposter?

    • GallusMag Says:

No, Carrera is just a huge liar. And a hypocrite. Rather than having an honest discussion about using “marginalized” terms among the very demographic that is marginalized, he would rather be a lying piece of shit.

    • GallusMag Says:

The “Nigga” posts originated from Carrera’s account. Some of them are still posted. He would just rather lie. He is a huge liar. Also a dumb idiot. And a racist asshole.

  8. ngblog Says:

No worries, GallusMag; you know I got Carmen’s number; and then some.

  9. shediogenes Says:

I’m just fascinated that he thought his denial would hold up when it originated in digital media. he cant seem to fathom that other ppl arent as dumb as he is. It is such a privilege to expect ppl to take you at your word, and after getting away with his bs on Katie Couric, he seems to think whatever he does is just golden. He wants the spotlight, but cant take the scrutiny that comes with it. The same scrutiny everyone else has to face when they reach some degree of notoriety, and he will be throwing a tantrum and calling it transphobia, coming soon to a tweet, or an interview near you. I’m just gonna sit back and watch the meltdown

  10. Louise Says:

Where is Little Parker Molloy on this? Where are the Twitter and Tumblr social justice warriors, especially the trans-loving ciswocs like Mikki Kendall? If a white feminist got busted saying this, we’d never hear the end of it. Then again that crowd thinks only white people can be racist, and that non-black insults against black people get the lesser charge of “anti-blackness”. Either way, you’d think any use of the n-word by a non-black z-lister would still be a scandal.

I was already done with these people, but if this goes nowhere it’s really the last straw. I don’t want to hear them boo hoo about slurs ever again. If anyone tries to argue with me about them, I’ll say so too.

    • GallusMag Says:

People tweeted the screencaps to Parker Molloy and asked if PM still supported Carrera as a credible authority vis a vis “slurs”. Parker responded “Wow. wow. Just wow.” and that was it. He did not respond further.

      • Louise Says:

They would never, ever let a woman get away with that non-committal answer. Molloy can’t even be arsed to say “That’s terrible and Carrera should apologize”? It’s like cops defending their own. Fuck these people.

      • GallusMag Says:

SO FUCKING TRUE. And THAT is why the malestream GBT press is not reporting.

      • Teal Deer Says:

He’s probably too busy with his full schedule of shaking under a sheet and asking strangers for surgery money to address anything that won’t benefit him.

    • GallusMag Says:

My bad. He said “Whoa. Wow. Wow. Thanks for pointing that out”

      • morag99 Says:

Tsk-tsk, Gallus. You reported Little Parker said “wow” when he really said “whoa.” Everything you say can and will be used against you by the trans Borg as evidence of … something.

    • It seems that he lost his grip on reality long time ago. I wonder if it gets worse from now on.

  11. Sage Says:

This is tyical of trash like this asshole. I’m glad people finally called him on his shit. I hope they continue to find more dirt on him.

BTW, the epithet “nigga” is offensive no matter who says it, black or not. It is a racial slur, and shouldn’t be part of this society’s vocabulary.

I’m not black, but this is comparable to other women calling me hoe, whore, bitch, and slut and claiming it’s alright because it comes from another woman. I’d find it offensive anyway.

  12. Susan Nunes Says:

More sick garbage: A petition is floating around trying to make this guy Victoria’s Secret first trans “Angel.” If this happens, it would appear Victoria’s Secret would be a business openly catering to the transvestite/autogynephile crowd: http://time.com/4084038/carmen-carrera-transgender-victorias-secret-model-actress/

    • morag99 Says:

“Openly” being the operative word! There’s no doubt their raison d’être is, ultimately, to cater to fetishists (and no, I’m not referring to the women who buy their underwear, bras, nightgowns, etc.)

Also: calling women (or children) “angels” is one of the many ways of ensuring our not-quite-human status, our roles mythical creatures or monsters — e.g., dinosaur, whore — that exist only in men’s minds.

Gah. It’s been almost a century since Virginia Woolf tried to kill the Angel in the House. Now she’s back with a vengeance — like a plucked chicken, in a ridiculous, painful push-up bra and stilettos. It makes PERFECT sense that trans “women” would be regarded as the best models/examples of womanhood now. I mean, of course they would — duh!

    • Mortadella Says:

But what will straight men say? Especially the homophobic ones. Could be an interesting clash of self-interest. Then again, what most straight men worship as the female sexual ideal is a male invention, so who knows? It’s interesting that most men don’t analysis this kind of shit because pop culture caters to them in the first place. God forbid men acknowledge their own privilege.

  13. Samantha Scott Says:

What pissed me off about the ‘tranny’ episode is that this, as you say, affectionate term was very publically banned but ‘fish’, which can never be anything other than offensive, stayed.
