School won’t let lesbian student change identities again

From the New York Post:

“School to student: Enough with the gender flip-flopping”

“Administrators at a Long Island high school forced a student to sign a contract barring her from changing her gender identity because she had switched it twice already, sources told The Post.”

Okay, it’s slightly odd to make a student sign a contract not to change her gender identity. Adolescents normally go through many stages of identity formation, you can’t really stop that process nor do you need to. And this student only changed her identity twice, which is not that much. However, adolescents these days don’t just get a strange piercing or dye their hair, or go around being goth for a while, now they force everyone around them to acknowledge their identities for them by changing the way they speak to them. The one thing I will agree with here is that the school should…

Student handbook: “each student gets up to two (2) gender change passes at freshman orientation, please do not lose them”

  2. Rachel Says:

Additional gender change passes may become available during the year, but are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Inter-library loan vouchers DO NOT count as gender change passes.

I knew a woman who flipped from lesbian to “gay transman” to “straight transman” and back and forth and back and forth. Interestingly, she never claimed to be bisexual even though that was popular with our peers.

She flipped 5 times in a little over 2 years, insulting and raging at anyone who “misgendered” her pronouns even accidentally. I finally ended the friendship and moved on with life.

Don’t have much to add here, except to say thanks — the weather has turned really hot here and this post reminded me to get out my gender flip-flops for summer. 😉

  5. The school finally woke up and said enough is enough.

    @ Ms. Mason,

“I knew a woman who flipped from lesbian to “gay transman” to “straight transman” and back and forth and back and forth.

WTF is a “gay transman” and a “straight transman”? I thought a “gay transman” was a female who thinks she is a “man” who has sex with men. What is a “straight transman”? Is that a female who thinks she is a heterosexual “man” who has sex with women?

Homosexuality is based on same sex sexual attraction not gender identity. Redefining homosexuality itself is the ultimate form of homophobia.

“Gay transman” = heterosexual or bisexual woman.

    “Straight transman” = lesbian

“She flipped 5 times in a little over 2 years, insulting and raging at anyone who “misgendered” her pronouns even accidentally.”

That is the beauty of “gender identity”. There is no limit to the number of times people can change their “gender”. There is nothing to prevent someone from changing their “gender identity” every month, or every day. God help us all if we use the wrong pronouns. No matter how many times they change their “gender identity”, we have to memorize and dutifully use whatever special pronoun (ze, they as in singular, zir, etc*). I refuse to play the pronoun game.

The solution to this madness is to do what people should have done years ago. Since “gender identity” has no clear definition, and people can change their gender identity as many times as they choose, get rid of “gender identity”. It’s a fundamentally flawed belief system, and we know that it only gets crazier all the time. Since no human can change his or her sex, make it illegal to change one’s sex on the birth certificate, etc. People with rare disorders of sexual development (intersex) could be an exception. When it’s clear that the person is either biological male or biological female with no intersex medical condition, it’s ludicrous to allow them to change the sex on their birth certificate, ID, etc.
