Trans Teen Apologizes For Campaign Against Lesbian Octogenarians

Bloodroot Restaurant

A transgender campaign against the Bloodroot Vegetarian Restaurant and Feminist Bookstore in Connecticut was launched over the holidays by a young person named Juniper, who is apparently a teenage girl who identifies as ‘non-binary’. (Non-binary individuals are members of a subculture who believe that reproductive sex does not exist as an objective dimorphism in mammals, and consider themselves to be reproductively intersex or neuter, although absent any evidence of such.)

Juniper kicked off the campaign to shut down the restaurant with the following Facebook post:

Part 2

part 2

Hundreds of transactivists responded by flooding the restaurant, owned and operated by Lesbian Feminists for over forty years, with hostile phone calls and emails and negative ratings and comments on their Facebook and Yelp sites, along with the requisite rape and death threats that have come to typify modern transgender activism.

“Burn it down and kill the owners”

Now Juniper is apologizing.

“I never intended to elicit threats of harm or death to the women of Bloodroot. I do not wish violence upon anyone- that’s the opposite of why I posted this. I greatly apologize for the unintended consequences of the situation…I agree that the use of the word “violence” to describe the Bloodroot owners was dramatic and out of place. I agree that folks (me included) tend to use the word “violence” frivolously, which can dehumanize the person we are accusing and unwittingly cause real violence to occur…Also, most of the businesses that we shop at are probably owned by shitty cis men who do real harm to women, unlike the owners of Bloodroot”

As many of you know, Bloodroot has recently come under attack and is currently being trolled by a number of people in the transgender community and their supporters. We felt it was time to make an official statement. Because it seems whenever we try and explain what happened and our stance on this issue, it only serves to inspire more hatred, we will not be replying to comments.

Bloodroot and her owners are not transphobic – far from it! Bloodroot has always welcomed and respected everyone – especially people who might feel uncomfortable in a public space. Whether that be people from other countries, people of color, people of every type of sexuality, and yes, people who are transgender. Our long-time customers know that, many who are transgender, which is why they have been rallying to our defense.

One of our relatively new customers was enthusiastically telling us about a space in Massachusetts that catered to trans people and asked if we knew about it. We didn’t but since we are not trans, it wasn’t all that interesting to us personally and stated that for us, we prefer women only spaces. This comes from our history. When Bloodroot first started in the 70’s we were trying to create a space specifically safe for women, since there were so few places like that at the time. Of course even back then we were open and welcoming to everyone, not just women. This customer misunderstood what was really an off-hand comment and perceived that to mean that we were anti-trans. She then wrote a post slamming us. That post was seen and shared. Then some in the trans community – most of whom have never been to Bloodroot – started trolling us. We find it ironic that of all the many businesses that you probably buy things from, it’s hard to imagine any of them being as supportive of not only trans people, but all people who are “different” from societal norms as Bloodroot has been and continues to be. But Bloodroot, a Vegetarian (mostly vegan) Restaurant and Feminist bookstore, that has been in business for 40+ years and is owned and run by two lesbians aged 73 and 83, is the place they decide to attack. Women who through their activism as second wave feminists help pave the way for the rights and freedoms that the trans community today enjoy!

The woman who wrote the original post has since removed it because as she said “I never intended to elicit threats of harm or death to the women of Bloodroot.

Imagine for a minute if hundreds of people who don’t know you started to attack you online, spewing lies about you that go against your core values, and trying to destroy you. Better yet, imagine them doing that to someone you love – your mother or grandmother for example. We understand this is a subject matter that many people are passionate about, but we feel this anger is misguided and misplaced.

Regardless of how you feel about Bloodroot’s stand on this, we will continue to be a welcoming space for all types of people, including those that are transgender, and treat everyone with respect. If you feel our explanation and response is inadequate for you, then you should not patronize us.

  1. Well, juniper just learned that males love an excuse to terrorize women with violence. And she gave them an excuse.

She is going to learn that there is no putting that horse back into the barn.

  2. Medi Says:

I hope this restaurant is getting some police protection, and the slander and violent threats should be fully investigated by police. The damage of these attacks on lesbian businesses and culture are shocking. Death threats on the internet are a crime, and can be tracked down.

  3. ” (Non-binary individuals are members of a subculture who believe that reproductive sex does not exist as an objective dimorphism in mammals, and consider themselves to be reproductively intersex or neuter, although absent any evidence of such.)”

Maybe she should spend some time at a farm? Or maybe a vet’s office? Interacting with non-human animals? See some rutting & some pregnant female animals & a female animal giving birth? & then she would realize how utterly ridiculous such notions are?

    & GROW THE FUCK UP?

    • If they really believe this I’m guessing there are going to be an awful lot of unplanned pregnancies… And they’re going to be *so* surprised!

    • Riffraff Says:

The sad thing is that their are some who will unironically call themselves “nonbinary woman” or “nonbinary lesbian” (Riley the Rapist is an example and for some WEIRD REASON you see the latter far more often than “nonbinary gay” 🤔).

I agree though. The fact these kids come from mostly suburban, middle class or above backgrounds really shows. They’re so sheltered yet completely arrogant and convinced that they can write their own reality. It would be hilarious if they weren’t getting as bad as TIMs.

  4. worriedmom Says:

In my experience, small business owners typically do not engage in extensive efforts to dissuade potential or actual customers, much less to cause a “media stir” that will draw unwanted negative publicity. In other words, when I first read this story of what happened at BloodRoot, my instinct was immediately to doubt Juniper’s account of what was said and done. It doesn’t pass the credibility bar, and really anybody reading it, should have realized that.

    • Riffraff Says:

      All of this.

Just the dialogue alone reads like one of those Tumblr tall tales that end with “and everyone on the bus stood up and clapped.”

  5. Why don’t they ever organize a march on the Vatican? The Curia don’t like em either.

I would even help out. Lots of women would–just say the word “Vatican” and we are there with bells on.

Oh wait, no women to harass at the Vatican.

And that’s no fun for them, is it?

  6. Oak and Ash Says:

When we seem to hear about a new mass murder every few weeks, violence against women is epidemic, and the health of the planet is at risk from corporate greed, what kind of fantasy world do Juniper and her pals live in that the people they see as most “dangerous” are older women who dare to speak their own truth? It’s as if their greatest fear is someone tearing the veil of their narcissistic delusions so that they’re forced to look at reality.

Also, male and female aren’t the only words they’ve redefined. “Violence” now means women saying things men and their handmaidens don’t like, while men threatenind and assaulting women who say those things is not violence, but justified self-defense (which, ironically, they don’t recognize as an imposed gender difference!).

These young people should get off social media and read the news–or even just a dictionary–and stop harassing women who are only trying to run a business and live their lives.

  7. These are gracious lovely women who accidentally said something that an overly sensitive “non-binary” teenager blew all out of proportion. It has gotten to the point to where women can’t say anything without them flying into a wild tizzy fit. Women have to tiptoe around and whisper to each other least they upset the special non-binary people.

I took a couple of minutes to google this restaurant. I usually Yelp or go online before I try a new restaurant. I read reviews, and Bloodroot always gets good reviews.

If I lived in Connecticut, I would definitely eat here. There is a reason they have been around for so many years. Their food is excellent and their service is good. Throughout the years they have had high marks. There is no way they could have survived all these years if they had lousy service. The restaurant business is competitive, and most fold after a couple of years. Only the best survive, and this is because they take pride in what they do.

  8. @gallus,

“(Non-binary individuals are members of a subculture who believe that reproductive sex does not exist as an objective dimorphism in mammals, and consider themselves to be reproductively intersex or neuter, although absent any evidence of such.)”

I guess to relieve their boredom because they don’t have anything better to do, trans and queer come up with a different idiotic term every other year or so. Then, they prance around calling themselves “non-binary”, whatever (there are 30 genders and counting). People had better treat them with kid gloves, address them by their special pronouns, or it will be scorched earth, stalking, harassing, etc. “Non-binary” is such a b.s. word. No one knows exactly what it means.

At least they didn’t rip posters off the wall and vandalize the place.

Or, God forbid, rough up the elderly owners, circling them like cowards, and then coming back to take another swing. Age means nothing to trans and queer.

Or, stalk and harass women for years, even on their own private property. MichFest was held on privately owned land.

And, we know what they are capable of doing. A transwoman who was part of Camp Trans that protested outside of MichFest, an event run by women, is now on trial for slaughtering a lesbian family.

  9. Margie Says:

“We find it ironic that of all the many businesses that you probably buy things from, it’s hard to imagine any of them being as supportive of not only trans people . . .”

BloodRoot’s owners just don’t get it. That trans activists attack pro-trans people and organizations is not an ironic twist. It’s a feature of their activism. They attack almost exclusively LGB people and progressive “cis” hetero people. They have never held a demonstration at Focus on the Family or the American Family Association or at Liberty University. Instead, their targets have ranged from the Womyn’s Music Festival to Dan Savage to Katie Couric to Roseanne Barr to gay filmmaker Israel Luna to the director of Boys Don’t Cry, just to name a few. About 2 months ago, they went after a gay documentarian who did a film about Marsha Johnson. And this week, it’s the lesbian, vegetarian restaurant BloodRoot.

Why do trans activists attack the progressive people who naively support them? It’s because they want their targets to grovel and beg for forgiveness. They get off on the power trip, on the thrill of wielding moral authority, of granting or withholding forgiveness. If there is no groveling and no apology, then there is no pleasure for them. They know that progressives are the ones most likely to give them what they want and need. And it’s the same reason why they rarely if ever attack Christian Right organizations; those folks won’t grovel.

  10. Capybara Says:

Was she confused that Audre Lorde would have dared to associate with such hateful exclusionary terrorists? Good gravy child….

  11. weirdward Says:

That queer girl is so cringy. Yeah, why would a well known lesbian feminist like Audre Lorde patronise a lesbian feminist restaurant? How can this beeeee???

There is such an element of ignorant fetishization in how the queers treat 2nd wave writers like Audre Lorde and the very few others they find acceptable (usually woc). There is a complete failure to actually engage with and understand their writings, let alone the social and political context in which they were writing. They just completely rewrite in their own minds what those writers were about so that they think they were just dick-centreing 3rd wavers ahead of their time, so that these idiots can gush over how much they love them and not look racist. I bet she’s never even read Audre Lorde’s books, only some completely out-of-context quote on tumblr that someone was pretending meant something completely different to what it did.

And wow, yeah, gotta always respect everyone’s identities, but not the worthless ones who don’t matter amiright? This girl’s own horrible lesbophbia and ageism was clearly at the root of why she decided to go after two lesbian women who have done more work for the lgbt community than she ever will.

Eh, well, what I think about teenagers who are behaving like this and acting in insufferable ways on the internet is … Good luck finding a job in five years time. The male ones of course like Lily Madigan do get rewarded for their atrocious behaviour, but the female ones won’t.

Even women who rightly stand up for themselves against injustices in the workplace etc. are nearly always going to be punished for it (unfairly), so imagine how a potential employer is going to view a potential employee who went off as a teenage girl against restaurant owners for an extremely minor comment, or the other one recently who got used by lawyers to get an $800,000 dollar settlements out of a school for supposed trans discrimination? (http://www.newsweek.com/transgender-student-won-800000-his-school-banning-him-boys-bathroom-777443)

I doubt many employers are going to want to deal with having those kinds of ticking time tombs in the workplace always poised to make drama. They’ll just hire someone else.

  12. FierceMild Says:

“TRANS PEOPLE ARE SACRED” that idea is very frightening. What in the world make strand people sacred?!

  13. Nonny Says:

Now I know where I’ll be dining if I’m ever in Connecticut!
